I recently purchased the 2020 Apple “M1” Mac Mini to replace my previous video editing setup. To save you some time researching, I compiled my best money-saving tips on how to maximize your bang-for-buck.

CHOOSING A STORAGE OPTION
Apple tends to charge an exorbitant premium for additional storage at the time of purchase which makes it extremely difficult to choose a storage option. I personally believe this is due to their push for cloud storage business in iCloud, but I could be totally wrong. Upgrading your internal storage from 256GB to 1TB will cost you an additional $400, which is over half the price of the base model Mac Mini. You can work around this by purchasing a fast external SSD like I did, which will save you more than half the price of the internal storage upgrade.
CHOOSING A RAM OPTION (8GB vs. 16GB)
If you are planning to use this Apple M1 Mac Mini for the long run or are going to be running multiple heavy applications at once, I would definitely spend the additional $200. If you are using this machine strictly for productivity, I believe the 8GB variant will be sufficient.
CUSTOMIZABILITY + ACCESSORIES
The benefit of purchasing the Apple M1 Mac Mini over other 2020 M1 devices (iMac, MacBook Pro, MacBook Air) is the ability to customize your setup. You can opt for ultrawide monitors, 4K monitors, RGB keyboards, wireless mouses, or whatever accessories you choose without coming near the prices of the other M1 devices. The M1 Mac Mini is also significantly smaller than the other M1 devices will give you more desk real estate and build a better overall computer setup.
APPLE EDUCATION PRICING & DISCOUNTS
You may be able to save money on your purchase of a Mac device by visiting the Apple Education Store where they often have discounts for college students. I have found that they almost never try to verify your student status so you may be able to save money whether you’re a student or not! You can also visit their Certified Refurbished Products website where they sell refurbished products at a discount.
