David and David explain what to do when your iPhone is frozen. You can usually unfreeze an iPhone by hard reseting it. A hard reset forces your iPhone to abruptly turn off and back on again.
While a hard reset can temporarily unfreeze your iPhone, it doesn’t actually fix the software issue that caused the problem in the first place. It’s a good idea to back up your iPhone immediately in case the problem recurs.

A lot of the time, a specific app is making your iPhone crash. Head to Settings → Privacy → Analytics & Improvements and see if any of your apps appear multiple times. If there is, check for an update to the app. If no update is available, delete and reinstall the app and see if that fixes the problem.
If your iPhone doesn’t just freeze when using a specific app, check for an iOS update. If there’s no update, or the update doesn’t fix the problem, Reset All Settings on your iPhone. This erases and restores everything in the Settings app back to factory defaults.
The final step you can take to completely rule out a software problem is a DFU (Device Firmware Update) restore. This is the deepest type of iPhone restore. Make sure you have a backup of your iPhone before putting it in DFU mode!
