Fruitwise guide to apple tree pruning-using the saw

The series of practical apple tree pruning tutorials continues with a look at the use of the pruning saw. You can use cheaper models (the Sandvik is OK) but for 3 years now we have only used the Silky Fox brand saws, specifically the Gomtaro Apple Ringo 300mm. This has a very thin blade and graduated tooth size which gives an exceptionally clean cut. you have to be careful on the forward stroke as if the blade catches in a thick branch the tip may snap off, and you have to be careful for your hands at all times since this is a saw which, when new, will go through 2cm branch with one stroke-it will do the same to a finger! Expensive, but like us if you have a bit of wear and tear in your wrists and hands-there is no contest, pay more for a better tool that puts less strain on your joints. Comes with wooden holster. (I have no connection with Silky Fox, and if anyone discovers a better saw, tell me and I’ll use that instead-my trees are worth it) .
