Review: Promise Pegasus R4i & J2i Add Massive Storage to your Mac Pro

The new Mac Pro can be configured with up to an 8TB SSD. But what if you want more than that? Promise co-designed the Pegasus R4i and Pegasus J2i with Apple to add massive amounts of internal storage through SATA or an MPX module.

  1. Wrong servers what is windows server 2003 is my favorite server Operating system and server has with Google data Center Youtube data center I have a massive 32 PB The stupid asshole computer but it’s not good as a server biggest failureThis ugly computer it is only a budget server

  2. Thank you, Andrew, for this instructional video!…Question: Will the R4i MPX Module fit inside the Mac Pro 2019 in addition to a Radeon Pro Vega II Duo graphics module and an Afterburner card?

  3. I know it’s not officially supported but could you please see if you can fit some other 3rd party drives and still use this device? Say 4×10 or 4x14TB drives for more space? I’d be interested to do expand it.

  4. So, I'm new to the channel, and I got to tell you, you need to work on your audio processing. You desperately need to high pass filter your mic and remove excess low-end energy and reduce those plosives. It's impossible to listen comfortably to you on a good audio system that accurately reproduces bass frequencies.

  5. The Mac Pro isn't worth its money. For this money you could get the latest high end gaming pc with the latest processor.

  6. Its aggravating that it does not have basic internal SSD storage as a native capability and not just the proprietary apple nvme options

  7. Im amazed how many people did not get the afterburner card in their mac pro. From the ones that I have seen get it and tested it it feels like the AB card is a MUST buy for the mac Pro for production work.

  8. haha you have to buy adapters just to add drives and then the heat of the CPUs and GPUs go on your drives and there's no exhaust fans.

  9. So in stead of slowing down and showing how to 'unlock' the sides and one the guards, you talk about it after the fact at blistering speed. What a waste of my time.

  10. Only Apple would sell a pro workstation that requires you to purchase a third party mechanism ($400+, too!!!) just to mount internal drives, and only Apple would design a pro workstation that forces you to unplug every single cable before you can even open it up to work on it.

  11. Apple has a support document that suggests installing the R4i into slot 1, and moving whatever existing MPX module to 3. I don't know why it would make a difference, but I guess if you have the smaller MPX video card it means you're not blocking slot 4, which is faster than slot 2.

  12. It would be nice of Promise to make an MPX module like the Pegasus R4i, but with NVME U.2 SSDs instead of SATA HDDs. Sure, it would be a lot more expensive, but given this is something that would be going inside of the new, up to $53,000 Mac Pro, it might not sway that many customers away.

  13. Thanks for the clip! I wish it were possible to get both of the enclosures without the drives … J2i is perfect for 2.5 SSDs having those power & SATA cables, while R4i is a great internal solution for hardware RAID5, if not for poor price / storage ratio. Also that management software looks outdated )= Would be helpful if you could check if is it possible to eject R4i to "shut it down" and then mount again through disk utility?

  14. Great information, thanks. You said the drives came formatted HFS+. Is this because of the RAID configuration? Can you see an advantage or disadvantage to converting to APFS?

  15. Do you think we can use 3.5 to 2.5 disk adapter and put 2 ssd in it instead of regular disk?

  16. I just need the J2i EMPTY, i already have my HDD´s. I´m really hoping Apple didn´t gave Promise a monopol on this…!
