Last year, Samsung proactively announced that it has begun mass production of the industry’s first uMCP products based on 12GB LPDDR4X and UFS multi-chip packages.

The multi-chip packaged uMCP solution is expected to replace the eMCP solution and become the best solution for the popularization of 5G mobile phones in the low-end market. uMCP will meet the growing performance and capacity requirements of the mobile market, achieving close to the same as high-end flagship smartphones Performance.

Before we talk about uMCP, we have to mention eMCP. So what is eMCP?

eMCP is the familiar solution that eMMC flash memory is packaged with control chip and low-power memory. It is widely used in middle and low-end mobile phones. The speed of eMMC flash memory of the same generation is often not better than the speed of UFS flash memory of the same generation.

In the past, when consumers were buying mobile phones, they also cared about whether the mobile phone was equipped with UFS flash memory. The speed of flash memory often determines the smoothness of the mobile phone’s application opening speed.

To use a popular example, eMMC is like a mechanical hard drive, while UFS is like a solid state drive. uMCP is a solution in which UFS flash memory, control chip and DDR5 high-speed memory are packaged together. With the maturity and continuous breakthrough of memory and packaging technology, the cost is not so high.

Providing flagship-level speed experience at affordable prices will enable more consumers to try to buy 5G mobile phones. Regardless of the price, they can experience the speed of 5G, allowing 5G networks to enter people’s daily lives faster.

The specifications have gone up, but the size is still compact. Compared with the previous uMCP solution of LPD-DR4X and UFS2.2, the uMCP solution launched by Samsung this time has increased the memory performance by more than 50%, and the speed has increased from 17GB/s to 25GB/s, while the flash memory performance It has doubled, and the speed has increased from 1.5GB/s to 3GB/s.

At the same time, in terms of package size, the new generation uMCP solution integrates memory and flash memory with the controller into a compact size of only 11.5mm and 13mm, leaving more space for the rest of the originals. In such a limited space, the memory supports 6GB-12GB, Storage supports 128GB-512GB capacity customization.

With such a powerful specification, such a compact size, and such a free customization program, the compatibility test with mainstream mobile phone manufacturers has been successfully completed, and it is expected to start in June 2021.

Smartphones equipped with the new uMCP will gradually enter the Chinese market, allowing more consumers who are hesitating between 4G and 5G to embrace 5G.
