Huawei founder Ren Zhengfei talks about 6G: Seizing the ground will not be controlled by patents

5G has just begun global construction, and 6G is already on the line. A few days ago, Huawei’s rotating chairman Xu Zhijun stated in his preface to the book “The New Journey of 6G Wireless Communications” that 6G is expected to be put on the market around 2030.

Regarding 6G networks, Huawei founder Ren Zhengfei also responded to the questions of the company’s employees at the company’s Academia Sinica Innovation Pioneer Symposium recently and talked about the significance of researching 6G.

Ren Zhengfei said that from a realistic commercial point of view, we must focus on the industrial application of 5G+AI, forming a legion of ports, airports, inverters, data center energy, coal mines, etc., to prepare for the assault.

Then why do we desperately research 6G? Science, endless frontiers. Each generation of wireless communication has developed new capabilities. 4G is a data capability, and 5G is a capability for the interconnection of everything. Will 6G display new capabilities and have unlimited imagination?

Radio waves have two functions: one is communication, and the other is detection. We only used communication capabilities in the past, not detection and perception capabilities. This may be a new direction in the future.

The future growth space of 6G may not only be large-bandwidth communications, it may also have detection and perception capabilities, and communication and perception integration. This is a larger scenario than communications. It is a new network capability that can better support expansion. Business operations, will this create a new direction?

Therefore, we study 6G to take precautions and seize the patent position. Don’t wait until one day when 6G is really useful, we are constrained by others because we do not have patents.

We used to emphasize standards because we are behind the times, and people already have a large amount of stock on the Internet. If we do not integrate into the standards, we will not be able to connect with others.

But when we “pierce through the sky” and lead the world, we should not be constrained by this, dare to go our own way, dare to create de facto standards, and let others connect with us. Just like the IP of Chambers back then, it stands alone.
