Elon Musk, one of the richest men in the world, is undoubtedly a busy man. He is the CEO and Chief Engineer at SpaceX, the CEO of Tesla, founder of The Boring Company, and co-founder of OpenAI and Neuralink.

Starlink is one of his many ambitious projects, operated by SpaceX. It is a satellite internet constellation or mega constellation, or simply put, a network of satellites that work together to provide us with internet access.

Starlink aims at providing high-speed satellite internet access to the most challenging places, that is, the rural and remote areas on the Earth.

In one of his interviews, Musk revealed that ‘Starlink’ aims in providing internet access to the world’s least served people. This means that people using the internet on ships or high-flying planes will be connected to the world like never before!
SpaceX’s satellite internet project was first announced in January 2015 but wasn’t given a name. In 2017, the project was named Starlink, inspired by John Green’s popular novel The Fault in Our Stars.
In December 2020, SpaceX won 885 million US Dollars in federal subsidies from a US government agency, the Federal Communications Commission or FCC for the Starlink project. The aim was to bring broadband connectivity to those parts of the US where there was little or no internet connectivity at all.
On 23 May 2019, the first 60 Starlink satellites were successfully launched on a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket. As of September 2021, SpaceX has deployed 1,740 Starlink satellites.

As per reports from SpaceNews, Starlink has filed for 30,000 more satellites with the International Telecommunication Union or ITU in 2019. In total, it has been estimated that SpaceX is aiming for the deployment of 42,000 Starlink satellites in space!

On 24 August 2021, Musk via his tweets said that Starlink had shipped 100,000 terminals around the world in 14 countries namely the US, the UK, Germany, Portugal, Canada, France, New Zealand, Denmark, Belgium, Switzerland, Austria, Australia, Netherlands, and Denmark.

Starlink satellites are deployed in low Earth orbit in order to improve latency, which is the time taken for transferring data from one point to another. The traditional satellites have high latency as they are located far from Earth, resulting in poor performance for activities like online gaming and video calls.

As Starlink satellites are over 60 times closer to Earth, they have lower latency and therefore provide much faster internet services.

Customers could pre-order their Starlink Beta in February by depositing a refundable amount of 99 US dollars and their kits would be shipped within two weeks from the date of the order. Also, customers will receive an email confirmation regarding the estimated shipping timeline.

If the customer is placing an order in an area where Starlink doesn’t have coverage yet, he/she will receive an email when services become available, and then the customer will have the right to update shipping, service, or deposit amount details or even cancel the order, as per Starlink’s official website.

Now, if you are wondering how you’ll connect to the Starlink satellite network, then as per the official site, a Starlink Kit consists of the Starlink satellite dish, a Wi-Fi router, cables, power supply, and a mounting tripod.

As mentioned in the Starlink FAQ, the tripod is designed for ground-level installation, so for those who want to install the kit on the roof of their home, roof mounts are also available, which they can ask for by signing in to their account.

Before installing the kit, customers have to use the Starlink app, which is available on both IoS and Android, for selecting the best location for installation at home. And, why is that? Well, the Starlink satellite internet needs a clear view of the sky to work efficiently, so by using the app, the customers will be able to get the best location to set up the device.
