Apple iPhone is difficult to protect the Lightning jack? China expresses support for “unification of charging specifications”

The Lightning port used by Apple’s iPhone has faced challenges in recent years. Not only does the EU legislation require it to be changed to USB-C, but even the Chinese government now expresses its support for a unified charging specification. Facing consumer trends and government pressure, it may make it difficult for Apple to secure Lightning in the future.

According to Chinese media sources, Ding Lei, the CEO of NetEase and a member of the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference, once proposed “unifying the charging sockets of smart electronic devices”, which received an official response from the official Ministry of Industry and Information Technology earlier. Unification, to avoid the waste of the original chargers and cables after replacing the equipment, and reduce electronic waste.

Although the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology of China has not pointed out which specification should be used as the standard, the current mainstream in the market is USB-C. The EU also uses USB-C in the bill, while retaining flexibility. If a better new standard emerges, the rules can be adjusted at any time.

Considering that most of the current Android mobile phones and consumer electronic products are close to USB-C, the most influential one is probably the Apple iPhone. The new model still uses Lightning, which was released in 2012. Currently, in terms of transmission and charging speed, it lags behind Android due to the connection protocol. Camp, in this regard, Apple has gradually eliminated Lightning from the iPad camp and changed it to USB-C, but there has been no action on the iPhone.

The European Union has officially proposed in September last year to unify the charging specification of electronic products as USB-C. After passing, each brand has 24 months to improve. It has been said that Apple will completely abandon Lightning and change it to a non-porous iPhone design before the deadline, relying solely on wireless charging and transmission.
