Windows 11: Perform an in-place upgrade using ISO file!

Just a month ago, Microsoft started rolling out Windows 11 to eligible users. The new update brings an overhaul to the design along with some new fantastic features and general improvements to the operating system.

If you’re not receiving the Windows 11 update through Windows Update, but the hardware meets the minimum requirements for the new OS, you can perform an in-place upgrade using the ISO image.

Once you’re done downloading the ISO image, you can mount it in File Explorer to start an in-place upgrade on a device with the operating system already installed.

To clean install Windows 11 with an ISO file, use these steps:
1. Open Microsoft Support website.
2 Under the “Download Windows 11 Disk Image (ISO)” section, select the Windows 11 option.
3. Click the Download button.
4. Select the installation language.
5. Click the Confirm button.
6. Click the Download button to save the Windows 11 ISO file on the device.
7. Right-click the ISO file, select the Mount option.
8. Select the virtual drive from the left navigation pane.
9. Double-click the Setup file to begin the Windows 11 installation.
10. (Optional) Click the Change how Windows Setup downloads updates option.
11. Select the “Download updates, drivers and optonal features” option.
12. Click the Next button.
13. Click the Accept button to agree to the terms.
14. Click the Install button.

Once you complete the steps, the Windows 11 ISO image will install the new Windows OS on the supported device.

Now, your system will restart so the update can be installed. This step can take some time depending on your hardware. For me, the installation was completed in around 25-30 minutes and I was greeted with the Windows 11 lock screen. Here, you’ll need to enter your PIN/password (if you’re using one), so Microsoft can finish the installation which will take another 5-15 minutes depending on your hardware.

Once done, you will be taken to the Windows 11 desktop and you can start using the new Windows 11 update.

You can always roll back to Windows 10 if you are unhappy with Windows 11.
