Samsung’s new Galaxy S22 features key incremental improvements and upgrades over the previous S21 – making for a truly great phone that almost has it all! The Samsung Galaxy S22 starts at $799 or £769 for 128g, also comes in 256GB. Comes in 4 colours, including phantom black. The matte texture on the glass back feels good in the hand. Compared to the S21, the S22 features a more boxy design with sharper corners and also a smaller display going from 6.2” to 6.1”. The phone feels premium and is very well made. The S22 is also IP68 water resistant. The 6.1” OLED display on the S22 is the best of the best. The ultrasonic under screen fingerprint reader is fast and reliable. I love the symmetrical bezels, as well at the tiny selfie camera. Colours really pop and make your videos and photos come to life. Get up to 1300 nits of brightness, it is clearly visible even in direct sunlight. It has a 120 hz refresh rate, making the phone feel even faster than it already is. At the same time, the display will also lower the refresh rate to 48 hz to help preserve battery. Let’s talk cameras. On the back we have a triple lens setup and this is a very impressive camera system. This starts with the new main 50 megapixel wide angle lens. Photos are rich in detail. White balance is accurate. Colours, are slightly more on the saturated side but still look fantastic. Video, though not at the level of the iPhone, is still great. Excellent image stabilisation. Auto focus is reliable. The 10 megapixel 110 degree ultra wide lens, looks great, especially in brighter conditions. Finally the 10 megapixel 3x telephoto lens is a useful lens to have, for portraits for example. Of the three the wide angle lens is best and is the one I use most. Samsung’s Nightography feature for low light photography is stunning. The selfie camera creates sharp photos. Also great for those selfies and video calls. The S22 is powered by the new Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 chip. Performs really well. Any games, photo or video editing apps run super smooth. Samsung’s one UI is stable. The S22 also gets 4 years of software updates, as an iPhone user I love to see this, still no 5-6 years but is getting there! The S22 has a smaller 3700 mAh battery compared to the 4000 mAh battery of the S21. The battery life is not bad, but in a phone where every key element is great, battery life is only ok. I found myself getting around 6 hours of screen-on time. For reference I get around 7-8 in the iPhone 13. Who is the Galaxy S22 for and is it worth it? The S22, at it’s price, is the best all-round phone you can buy on the Android side
The S22 is also comparable to the iPhone 13 in many ways. Both are in my opinion the best all-round phones offered by each manufacture. With all of it’s strengths, the S22 is the iPhone of android – the default android phone. All together, this makes the S22 easy to recommend, to android users looking for a solid upgrade but also iPhone users looking to try something different!
