Elon Musk said, “Space is hard” and colonizing Mars is much harder. To achieve get that goal come true, Elon created the monster rocket “Starship” powered by 33 raptor engines. And to run those powerful 33 raptor engines to beat the gravity of Earth, SpaceX surprised the entire Rocket industry by using a new fuel. This will be the key for SpaceX and Elon Musk to make us humans a multi-planet species.
But the real question is: So wWhy did SpaceX decide to use a new fuel, shocking the rocket industry?
What does this mean for Musk’s Mars plan?
Let’s find out in today’s episode of Great SpaceX!

SpaceX’s new Starship and Super Heavy rocket both use the Raptor engine. Liquid Methane and Oxygen are the fuel mixtures for of this engine. What makes it special is that nNo other rockets hasve ever used Methane as rocket fuel. The Falcon 9 and Falcon Hheavy both use kerosene (RP-1) as fuel, which is more common in the rocket industry. AndMoreover, for a long time, Hydrogen has been used in various rockets. UltimatelyBut, SpaceX chose Methane as their go-to fuel for their fatedir Raptor engine.
ButSo why didoes SpaceX decide onuse Methane?
It’s because Methane (CH4) is cheap, can be stored in a passive cooling system is enough to store Methane in liquid form, is significantly denser than Hydrogen, can be storabled for a more extended periods, does not leak, does not require insulation on the fuel tank, and designing rockets based on methane the rocket design is less complex when compared to other rockets of a different fuel mix.
Allow me to explain:Let’s elaborate.
SpaceX’s Starship is designed as a rapidly reusable Mars rocket dead-set on reaching and colonizing Mars.
But when RP-1 (or kerosene) fuel burns, it generates a lot of carbon, coating engine components with coke and limiting the potential for re-use.
Meanwhile, cleaner burning methane engines are expected to improve theat turnaround time and reduce launch costs even further.
But the future of methane rockets’ future goes beyond just an expected improvement in reusability.
In 2013 when the Raptor was announced, it was described as a “highly reusable methane staged-combustion engine that will power the next generation of SpaceX launch vehicles designed for the exploration and colonization of Mars.”
Elon If Musk wants to go to Mars in the fastest way possible,. aA spaceship will take more than 6 months to reach Mars from Earth, making. tThe round trip 12trip is 12 months. A whole year to and from the Red Planet!
And methane engines have an advantage when it comes to thein launch location.
