Stop Starlink Drop-Outs at Anchor on a Boat

If you’ve considered putting Starlink on your boat, no doubt drop outs are a concern while you’re at anchor. This simple yet ‘warranty voiding’ hack stops Starlink Drop-Outs at Anchor on a Boat!

After observing great connectivity with our Starlink when is it is completely horizontal and before the dishy’s motors point it North, we started researching how we could disable the motors on the Starlink dish. Unfortunately, there is no way to shut off the motors with the Starlink user interface so, In this video we are going to put a hole in our brand new Starlink dish so we can disconnect the motor so it will lay flat instead of trying always adjust and point North. We used a one inch Forstner drill bit to make a shallow hole as to not go to deep and damage the dish.

While this modification may seem destructive at first, we have found that reconnecting the motors is an easy physical ‘plug and play’. To keep access to the motor plug in and keep water out, we found a plug to cover the hole we drilled in the dish.

After making the modification, we found equal or better download/upload speeds and MUCH lower drop-outs. We’re ready to anchor out while ensuring that our dish remains connected as long as possible.
