Emoji 14.0 new emojis will be delayed

The Unicode Consortium announced today that due to COVID-19, the Unicode Consortium has postponed the release of Emoji 14.0. The specific reason for the delay is “too long to prepare developers to add emoji to their phones.”

This means that the new emojis introduced in the 14th version will not land on the major platforms until 2022, not 2021. The new emojis generally land on iOS and Android platforms in the fall. This time the release time is delayed by 6 months, and it is likely to be delayed from the fall of 2021 to the spring of 2022.

The new emoji in Emoji 14.0 has not yet been finalized, so the deadline for submitting new proposals has also been postponed to September this year.

Because developers need a certain amount of preparation time to add emojis to their mobile phones, emojis finalized in January will not appear on mobile phones until about September. For example, the emoji in the 13.0 version in March 2020 will not appear on mobile phones until the fall of 2020. As the release time of the Unicode 14.0 version was postponed, the deadline for submitting new emoji 14.0 emoji proposals was also postponed to September 2020.

Currently, the Unicode Consortium has finalized 117 new emojis as part of the Emoji version 13.0. These new emojis will land on major platforms this year. These new emojis include “Hand of Italy”, Ninja, Transgender flags, anatomical body parts, smiley faces with tears, disguised faces, new animals, food, parents feeding the baby, etc.

The release of Emoji 13.0 will not be postponed, these updates will come sometime this fall.
