Activate & turn on Siri on the iPhone

Activate and turn on Siri on the iPhoneYou can use Siri to call someone, quickly dictate a text message, set a reminder and much more – the function is constantly being improved and expanded. If you’re new to the iPhone or haven’t used the virtual voice assistant (for whatever reason), you may not yet know how to use it. That’s why we’re going to show you here how you can activate and switch on Siri on your iPhone.

Turn on Siri

To be able to use Siri at all, you first have to switch on the voice assistant:

  1. First of all, open the Settings app.
  2. Scroll to the menu item “Siri & Search” and tap it.
  3. Move the switch for “Press the home button for Siri” (up to iPhone 8) or “Press the side button for Siri” (from iPhone X) to the right. Confirm the activation with a tap on “Activate Siri”

At this point you can also activate the “Hey Siri” function, with which you can then start Siri by voice command. To do this, tap on the switch to the right of “Pay attention to Hey Siri”. In another post we will show you in detail how you can configure “Hey Siri”.

Tip: Did you know that you can delete your Siri history and prevent the analysis of your voice data?

Activate Siri on all iPhone models

You basically have two options for starting Siri. And this is how it works on the individual iPhone models (including the “Plus”, “Pro” and “Max” versions).

iPhone 11, iPhone 11 (Pro Max), iPhone 12 (Pro Max / mini), iPhone X, iPhone XS (Max), iPhone XR

Briefly press and hold the right side button on the iPhone until the Siri interface appears and release the button again. Now you can ask Siri your question or give your command. Siri will automatically stop speaking when it knows you’re done.

iPhone 8, iPhone 7, iPhone 6s, iPhone 6, iPhone 5s, iPhone 5, iPhone 4s

Hold the home button on the iPhone briefly until the Siri interface appears and release the button again. Now you can ask Siri your question or give your command. Siri will automatically stop speaking when it knows you’re done.

Tip: Siri can reliably record longer voice inputs by holding down the home button or the side button. So you don’t run the risk of being stalled in the middle of your request. That way, you can practically force Siri to listen. So that you can also use Siri’s range of functions optimally, you should tell the voice assistant more about yourself!

“Hey Siri” – iPhone 6s to iPhone 12 (Pro Max / mini)

Just say “Hey Siri” to start Siri and ask your questions or give your command. Here, too, Siri automatically ends the voice input when it recognizes that you are done.
