iOS 15: These iPhone models get the update

iOS logoWith the iOS 15 update expected in autumn, Apple is giving iPhone users a new and revised version of the operating system, which usually also brings numerous brand new features and functions to Apple smartphones. However, the new iOS 15 cannot be installed on all iPhone models, because after 4 – 5 years Apple’s willingness to supply the old devices with fresh software updates usually ends. That’s why we looked into the question of which iPhone models will (likely) receive the major iOS 15 update and which will not.

These iPhones receive the iOS 15 update (not)

We remember: The iOS 14 update released in 2020 was received by all iPhones that already supported iOS 13. For the oldest of the devices considered at the time of the release of iOS 14, however, the end of the flagpole should now be reached. At least if you believe the reports from the Israeli iPhone blog The Verifier and the French website Phonesoft. They want to know that support for the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus models introduced in 2015 and for the iPhone SE released in 2016 with iOS 15 will end.

iPhone 6s

The forecasts of the two websites have already proven to be correct in the past. For example, they correctly predicted at the time that all iPhones that support iOS 13 would also receive the iOS 14 update, as reported by the online magazine t3n. In this respect, the chances are not bad that iOS support for said old devices could actually be over.

Whether the allegations are true will be revealed at Apple’s WWDC developer conference in June at the earliest, when the iPhone manufacturer will present the new iOS 15 and a list of compatible devices. However, a look at Apple’s update policy in the past suggests that the iPhone 6s and iPhone SE could soon be thrown out of the update program. Because no iPhone has received iOS support for more than 5 years. It is therefore also relatively likely that the iPhone 7 (Plus) released in autumn 2016 will still receive the new iOS 15 update, which will pass the five-year mark in September 2021. As for the other supported devices, according to Phonesoft, the following iPhone models will receive iOS 15 support:

  • iPhone 12 Mini
  • iPhone 12
  • iPhone 12 Pro
  • iPhone 12 Pro Max
  • iPhone SE 2020
  • iPhone 11
  • iPhone 11 Pro
  • iPhone 11 Pro Max
  • iPhone XS Max
  • iPhone XS
  • iPhone XR
  • iPhone X
  • iPhone 8 Plus
  • iPhone 8
  • iPhone 7 Plus
  • iPhone 7

By September at the latest, when Apple presents the new iOS 15 together with the new iPhone models, we will certainly know which devices will benefit from the major software update.
