The head of Taiwan TSMC, the world’s largest semiconductor producer, said in its earnings announcement on July 15, local time, that it is in the process of considering building a factory in Japan. However, it seems that it is not the cutting-edge chips installed in iPhones etc. that may be produced in Japan.

CEO “Do not rule out all possibilities”

TSMC CEO Wei Tetsuya, who was asked about the construction of a factory in Japan during the Q & A session on July 15th, is in the stage of “due diligence” to consider investment efficiency, etc. He said he would not rule out the possibility.

The company’s chairman, Liu Tokuon, explained that the role played by Japanese factories is “specialty technology,” which refers to mature nodes for specific niche markets. It suggests that it is not a state-of-the-art chip.

Are you ready to make cutting-edge chips in the United States?

TSMC is the world’s largest semiconductor manufacturer and Apple’s leading supplier of A-series chips for iPhones and other devices.

TSMC is reported to have a state-of-the-art 3nm process production line at its plant in Phoenix, Arizona, USA.

There are also reports that a factory will be built in Kumamoto

Regarding TSMC’s expansion into Japan, it is reported that it plans to set up a research facility in Tsukuba City, Ibaraki Prefecture.

In June, the Nihon Keizai Shimbun reported that a large-scale TSMC factory would be built in Kumamoto, and became a hot topic.
