Netflix charges for account sharing with family and friends other than the same household

Netflix, a video distribution service, announced on March 16 local time that it will start a test run of a new feature for sharing accounts with family and friends who are not living together.

Account sharing with family and friends other than living together is rampant

Netflix allows family members in the same household to share an account. However, in reality, it seems that there are many cases where Netflix accounts are shared with family and friends who do not live together by sharing passwords.

Increasing account sharing will, of course, reduce Netflix’s revenue. “Account sharing between families is impacting investments in new drama series and filmmaking,” the company said in its official blog.

Start in Chile, Costa Rica and Peru

Netflix has set out to overcome this situation by charging for account sharing with non-family members. The company has announced that it will begin testing the new pay-as-you-go features “Add Extra Members” and “Migrate Profiles to New Accounts” in Chile, Costa Rica and Peru.

“Add Extra Member” allows members of the Standard Plan and Premium Plan to add up to two users who are not living together as sub-accounts. Each sub-account user has his or her profile, login password, and recommendations. The fee for adding an extra member is about 360 yen per person (cost in Costa Rica).

“Migrate profile to new account” means that basic, standard, and premium members will transfer the profile information (including browsing history, my list, and recommendations) of users who have shared the account to the new account or sub-account as it is. It is a function that can be done. This means that users who currently share a Netflix account with a non-living family member can continue to transfer to a new account or subcount without losing their profile information.
