Until now, Rakuten Mobile could be used free of charge if the monthly data usage was small, but it was announced that the minimum usage fee will be 1,078 yen (tax included) from July.
I use Rakuten Mobile, but I often communicate via Wi-Fi, and most of the months have been free so far, so I seriously considered switching.
Here are some recommended plans that we chose with an emphasis on cheapness.
Price increase of Rakuten Mobile that cannot be covered by increasing the point award rate
From July 1st, Rakuten Mobile will start a new plan “Rakuten UN-LIMIT VII” with a monthly charge of 1,078 yen to 3,278 yen (tax included) depending on the amount of monthly data used. Existing plan users will also be automatically transferred to the new plan as soon as the new plan is available.
The biggest change is that Rakuten Mobile will no longer be available for free.
Until now, Rakuten Mobile could be used for 0 yen if the monthly data usage was 1 GB or less, but from July it will be 1,078 yen (tax included) for all 3 GB or less.
On the other hand, if you are using Rakuten Mobile, the point award rate will increase from the conventional + 1% to + 2% when shopping at Rakuten Ichiba, and if you are a Diamond member, it will be further increased by + 1%.
If you calculate the conditions that will make you more profitable than before, the annual increase in payment due to the price increase is 12,936 yen, so
- Diamond members: 12,936 yen ÷ 2% = 646,800 yen
- Others: 12,936 yen ÷ 1% = 1,293,600 yen
It is a calculation that you will get if you do only shopping at Rakuten Ichiba for one year.
Only a limited number of people are doing this much shopping at Rakuten Ichiba, and many will pay more.
Three plans recommended for transferring from Rakuten Mobile selected for cheapness
The author is also a Rakuten mobile user, but I am considering switching by MNP with this price increase as an opportunity.
Since I’ve used it for 0 yen so far, the condition of the transfer destination is just to emphasize cheapness. Here are three plans that I found recommended for switching from Rakuten Mobile.

Japan Communication SIM Reasonable Simple 290 Plan
As the name suggests, the rational simple 290 plan of Japan Communication SIM is a plan with a monthly charge of 290 yen.
With this charge, you can make high-speed communication up to 1GB per month, and you can increase the amount of communication for 220 yen / 1GB. Even with 3GB, it costs 710 yen, which is cheaper than Rakuten Mobile.
The call charge is 11 yen / 30 seconds without a dedicated application, and you can also use the 70-minute free option of 700 yen and the unlimited call option of 1,600 yen.
You can also set an upper limit for the amount of communication, but it is important to note that if you exceed this upper limit, you will not be able to communicate at all. It is not possible to perform low-speed communication like other companies, so be careful about the set values.
povo 2.0
povo 2.0 is a plan with a basic usage fee of 0 yen.
For low-speed communication, you can use it for 0 yen, and if necessary, purchase high-speed communication in the form of “topping”.
If you do not need high-speed communication, you can operate it for 0 yen, and if you charge with topping only when you need it, you may be able to use it cheaper than Japan Communication SIM in total.
However, please note that if you do not purchase toppings for 180 days or more and the usage fee is less than 660 yen, you may be subject to line suspension or cancellation.
The call charge is 22 yen / 30 seconds, which is higher than that of Japan Communication SIM.
Free call toppings are also available (all-you-can-call within 5 minutes: 550 yen / month, all-you-can-call: 1,650 yen / month).
OCN Mobile ONE 500MB / month course
OCN Mobile ONE, a major MVNO, offers a plan with a high-speed communication volume of 500MB / month for 550 yen per month.
A feature of this plan is that the price includes 10 minutes worth of free calls. A maximum of 220 yen / month is discounted from the call charge, so those who do not use a lot of calls but definitely use a little may be better than Japan Communication SIM or povo 2.0.
You can apply at the docomo Shop, so it is safe for people who are worried about applying online.

From these three plans, the author decided to MNP to the rational simple 290 plan of Japan Communication SIM.
I rarely make calls, and there is also a 60-minute / month free call for Skype that is set in Microsoft 365, so OCN Mobile ONE, which offers 10-minute / month free calls, was not a candidate.
I have already used povo 2.0, and I may unify it here, but it seems that it will be expensive as a result because it does not mean that high-speed communication is not done at all.
The rational simple 290 plan of Japan Communication SIM is 1GB, which is enough for high-speed communication, and the call charge is 11 yen / 30 seconds, which is cheap. With this, the monthly charge is 290 yen, which is an exceptional charge setting.
