Researchers at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) have developed an electronic device that can continuously measure blood sugar, alcohol intake, and lactate levels, which indicate muscle fatigue, by simply sticking them on your arm.

Continuous measurement just by pasting it on the upper arm

The device measures 24 mm in diameter and 10 mm in thickness, and consists of an electronic device case containing an electronic sensor, battery, wireless transmitter, etc., and a microneedle patch. The device can be charged with a wireless charger for smartphones (it seems to be compatible with Qi).

When attached to the upper arm like a sticker, the microneedles pierce the surface of the skin, but since the microneedles are only about one-fifth the thickness of hair, no pain is felt. In addition, the needle part is disposable and can be removed and replaced from the electronic case.

Results can be confirmed in real time on a smartphone

Enzymes are attached to the tips of the microneedles and react with glucose, alcohol, and lactic acid in the interstitial fluid that surrounds the cells beneath the skin. An electronic sensor analyzes the minute current generated by this reaction and wirelessly sends the result to the smartphone app. Users can check the results in real time with the smartphone app.

UCSD put electronic device patches on the upper arms of five collaborators, had them exercise, eat, and drink, and continuously measured glucose, alcohol, and lactic acid levels. It is said that the values measured by the electronic device patch are almost the same as the values obtained by the blood glucose level measuring device, the drinking detector, and the blood glucose lactate level measured in the laboratory.
