Apple states in the patent that tactile input can be received in the user’s natural holding position, and that the stylus can effectively distinguish tactile input from the user, distinguishing the continuous tactile input provided when the stylus is naturally held from valid input. The patent states that when someone is using the Apple Pencil or any stylus, they are unlikely to touch the screen of an iPad or similar device at the same time.

Apple believes that users may be limited to the input options provided by a stylus or other touch-based input device held by the user, so the additional input capabilities integrated into the input device will provide users with expanded input capabilities, while There is no need to operate additional input devices at the same time.

To achieve this, the Pencil will add a “low profile” sensor, such as a capacitive sensing device. Haptic input can be received at the user’s natural holding position. Prior to this patent filing, there have been several patents for stylus bases and nibs like the Apple Pencil, many of which even utilize the same drawings.

In December 2019, one such patent covered how the Apple Pencil’s stylus could use haptic feedback to better simulate the feeling of drawing on paper. A similar patent from 2015 covered the same purpose, but with the stylus as a whole. Another example is also an Apple patent filed in December 2019 in which the stylus uses a camera to decipher and record physical features of a surface.
