New iPhone 14 features hidden in iOS 16 code

According to foreign media reports on June 20, recently, Apple officially announced the preview version of the latest iPhone operating system iOS 16 at WWDC. Unsurprisingly, the official version of the operating system will be released this fall alongside the iPhone 14 series.

iOS 16 offers many new features, such as the ability to customize the lock screen or edit iMessages you send.

But if you look closely, you will find that iOS 16 may also reveal some news about the iPhone 14 series. Today, let’s summarize the clues about the new machine hidden in the iOS 16 code.

iOS 16 seems to be no different. A few features look likely to give us a hint of what to expect from the iPhone 14 lineup. One of these clues is actually hidden in iOS 16’s code.

Added always-on display mode

Some time ago, many analysts and media broke the news that Apple will add always-on display in iOS 16. But it turned out that Apple did not add this feature in iOS 16. Currently, many Android phones and even Apple’s own Apple Watch have this handy feature. It is reported that the display screen in the always-on mode will display some basic information such as weather conditions when the phone is in sleep state.

According to the latest report from 9to5Mac, the media found some clues in the code of iOS 16, which shows that the new model of the iPhone may support the always-on mode. “We found references to backlight management tools and hidden flags for engineers from the code. These allow them to test the feature on the iPhone 13 Pro.”

But the display in always-on mode can be limited, as the screen’s refresh rate has to drop to 10Hz or even lower to use less power; well below the typical 60Hz refresh rate of the average iPhone. The Apple Watch’s always-on display works at 1Hz, which isn’t supported by any current iPhone, which could mean always-on mode or debuting on the flagship versions of the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max.

More powerful movie mode

One of the new additions to iOS 16 is an improved visual search feature. The new feature can identify objects, people, pets and landmarks shown in photos and provide additional or extended information. In addition, the powerful cutout function of iOS 16 is also eye-catching.

From the above new features in iOS 16, it can be predicted that the movie mode of the iPhone 14 series may be improved. Combined with the A16 Bionic chip, the new machine can make movies in movie mode look better. Not only can you achieve accurate cutouts in the movie, but the background may also have an additional out-of-focus display. Meanwhile, Apple could also use separation technology to let Movie Mode do more things like Portrait Mode, like replacing the background with black or placing the subject against a white background.

It is reported that the movie mode debuted on the iPhone 13 series, which is basically Apple’s adoption of the portrait mode for a movie. While movie mode is fun to use, results can suffer.

Professional Mode for Camera App

Apple will improve the camera capabilities of the iPhone 14 series, and it is already “a certainty”. The cameras of the iPhone 14 series will have many improvements, such as SmartHDR and Deep Fusion.

Apple added a customizable lock screen in iOS 16, heralding a major update to the camera app on the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max. The new camera may add a Pro mode, and provide shortcuts to quickly adjust camera settings and a new control interface.
