Apple Watch Series 8 watch S8 processor is equivalent to Series 6 chip, Apple Watch SE 2 size remains unchanged

On June 27, Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman talked about the new Apple Watch watches that Apple will launch later this year, including the Apple Watch Series 8 and Apple Watch SE 2, in the latest Power On newsletter.

Following reports that Apple would bring a faster S8 chip to the Apple Watch Series 8, Gurman said he was told “the S8 chip will have the same specs as the S7.” But here’s the catch: The S7 chip is the same as the S6 chip in the 2020 Apple Watch Series 6.

That said, the Apple Watch Series 8 will be as fast as the Apple Watch Series 7 and Apple Watch Series 6. For next year’s model, Gurman said the Apple Watch Series 9 will feature “an all-new processor.”

Speaking of the Apple Watch SE 2, it won’t have the larger screen introduced on the Apple Watch Series 7. Mark Gurman wrote:

“The Apple Watch SE will stick to the screen size of the current model rather than upgrade to the larger Series 7 size. But it will likely get the same S8 chip as the Series 8, which is an upgrade over the 2020 Apple Watch SE’s S5.”

Last but not least, Mark Gurman speculates on what will happen to the Apple Watch Series 3:

“The watchOS 9 software update drops support for the Apple Watch Series 3, so I ultimately expect that model to be discontinued in the fall. The current Apple Watch SE will likely drop to the Apple Watch Series 3 price point, while the new Apple Watch SE will Be a mid-tier option.”

Although Gurman has no new mentions, he has previously said that the Apple Watch Series 8 is expected to have at least one new temperature sensor.

In April of this year, analyst Ming-Chi Kuo also paid close attention to temperature sensors. He says:

“If the algorithm can meet Apple’s high requirements before mass production, I believe that the Apple Watch Series 8 in 2H22 can measure body temperature.”

Finally, Gurman previously said that Apple may also launch an Apple Watch extreme sports model in 2022.
