Informed sources say that Apple has scheduled TSMC’s 3-nanometer chip production

>

According to reports, people familiar with the matter revealed that TSMC’s first batch of chip production capacity using 3-nanometer technology has been booked by Apple for the production of iOS devices and self-developed chips.

Previously, there were reports that TSMC was close to completing the research and development of a new 3-nanometer process. The latest reports show that Apple has booked orders for the company’s M series and A series processors to use this technology.

According to people familiar with the supply chain, the current trial production is progressing steadily. They estimate that TSMC’s current annual production capacity of 3-nanometer chips is 600,000 pieces, 50,000 pieces per month, and mass production will begin in 2022.

These data may increase because the media estimates that TSMC will have to sell at least 300 million processors to achieve profitability.

Although it is not clear about the number and time frame of Apple’s orders, people familiar with the matter said that these orders are mainly used to produce M series processors for Mac computers.

In addition, 3nm chips can also be used in iPad and Macbook devices, and new A-series processors are produced for the iPhone. There have been rumors that Apple will use 3 nanometer technology for A16 processors in 2022.

TSMC previously announced that the performance of the 3-nanometer process will be 10% to 15% higher than that of the 5-nanometer process, and energy saving will be 20% to 25%.

TSMC is also developing a 4nm process and will launch it before 3nm. Both 3nm and 4nm processes will allow TSMC to directly compete with Samsung, but people familiar with the matter said that TSMC will be at least six months ahead of Samsung in launching these products.
