Why did Apple stop making the 5.4-inch iPhone 14 mini?

It’s just over a month since the release of the iPhone 14 series, but here’s some bad news for iPhone 13 mini fans: there’s no iPhone 14 mini this year.

Why did Apple stop making the 5.4-inch iPhone 14 mini?

Many reports suggest that we won’t see the iPhone 14 mini this year.

9to5Mac also exclusively reported that there was no iPhone 14 mini in Apple’s test content.

In fact, there have been many rumors that this year’s iPhone series will no longer have “14 mini”, and this small-sized mobile phone that has lasted for two years will withdraw from history.

Why did Apple stop making the 5.4-inch iPhone 14 mini?

In 2020, Apple introduced the 5.4-inch iPhone “mini” in the iPhone 12 series. Although an iPhone of this size has gained a group of supporters, it is quickly found through data that the sales of the iPhone 12 mini are not as good as those of other iPhone 12 series products.

Just two months after the launch of the iPhone 12 lineup, a report by CIRP analysts showed that the iPhone 12 mini accounted for just 6% of iPhone sales in those two months. By comparison, the iPhone 12 accounted for 27% of sales, followed by the iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max at 20% each.

In fact, while the iPhone 12 mini is one of the big new iPhone offerings, it’s outselling older iPhones, including the iPhone SE, iPhone 11, and iPhone XR.

The iPhone 13 mini, released in September 2021, has improved battery life and screen brightness, but sales are still relatively low. The latest data from CIRP shows that the iPhone 13 mini accounted for only 3% of total iPhone sales in the second quarter.

Why did Apple stop making the 5.4-inch iPhone 14 mini?

The iPhone 13 mini (and the iPhone 12 mini before it) occupies an odd spot in Apple’s lineup. Currently, Apple sells the following models of iPhone:

iPhone SE: 64GB of RAM for $429

iPhone 11: 64GB of RAM for $499

iPhone 12 mini: 64GB of RAM for $599

iPhone 12: 64GB of RAM for $699

iPhone 13 mini: 128GB of RAM for $699

iPhone 13: 128GB of RAM for $799

iPhone 13 Pro: 128GB of RAM for $999

iPhone 13 Pro Max: RAM 128GM for $1099

The iPhone 12 mini and iPhone 13 mini, which have a smaller screen than the iPhone 11 and iPhone 12, may be difficult for many iPhone buyers to accept. While the latter two have more advantages, many consumers consider devices with larger screens to be more premium.

The iPhone 14 (codenames D27 and D28), iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max (codenames D73 and D74) will all be available in 6.1-inch and 6.7-inch form factors.

That means the smallest display in the iPhone 14 series is 6.1 inches, and Apple is reducing the available screen sizes from three to two. The iPhone 13 mini is likely to be sold at a lower price, around $599.

The “mini” form factor of the iPhone may be reflected in future products of the iPhone SE series, but for now, the iPhone 14 series will mark the end of the “mini” era.
