MacBook Pro/Air manufacturing bases diversified ~ Moves to avoid risks such as lockdowns

DigiTimes reports that Apple plans to decentralize its MacBook Pro and MacBook Air manufacturing operations in China.

Risk-averse movements such as lockdowns

According to DigiTimes, the purpose of dispersing the manufacturing bases of MacBook Pro and MacBook Air in China is the lockdown due to the spread of new coronavirus infections that occurred in the second quarter of 2022 (April to June). This is to avoid a major impact on the production of the product in the future.

Quanta Computer, which is responsible for about 60% of the MacBook assembly work, has been manufacturing at the Shanghai factory so far, but it is expected to transfer some of it to the Chongqing factory.

The company makes 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pros, as well as MacBook Air with M1 (13.3-inch MacBook Air) and MacBook Air with M2.

Foxconn, which is responsible for about 40% of the remaining MacBook assembly work, manufactures the 13-inch MacBook Pro and the M1-equipped MacBook Air at its factory in Chengdu.

China Wingtech is expected to enter the market in the future

DigiTimes reports that Apple will switch from both companies to China’s Wingtech in the second half of 2022 for the M1-equipped MacBook Air.

Wingtech is expected to be responsible for 5% of all MacBooks in 2022 and 10% in 2023.

DigiTimes said Apple ultimately plans to have Quanta Computer responsible for 55%, Foxconn 35%, and Wingtech 10%.
