New: Google now helps you save fuel!

Google maps logoWhen it comes to fuel prices, drivers tend to cover their ears these days. A new function in Google’s map service, Google Maps, is now intended to help save fuel by not only showing the fastest, but also the most economical route. Find out everything you need to know about the new feature here!

Google Maps Now With “Fuel-Efficient Routes”

Anyone who relies on their own car has really had nothing to laugh about lately. Fuel prices have moved far too quickly in the wrong direction for that. A new function in the Google Maps app now promises to limit the cost of petrol & Co. to a certain extent. After first the USA and then Canada, the search engine provider is now also introducing “fuel-saving routes” in Germany. In addition to the fastest route, the most economical route with the lowest fuel consumption now also appears when planning a route.

Fuel-efficient routes in Google Maps

To determine the consumption, Google takes into account parameters such as the length of the route, the type of road (country roads or motorways), the road gradient and the current traffic situation. You can recognize the fuel-saving route – which is usually also the fastest – by the leaf icon next to the estimated arrival time and the information on the possible fuel savings compared to the alternative route in the lower menu area. Which route you then choose is, as always, up to you.

If you only want to see the fastest route regardless of the fuel savings, you can specify this in the app settings. There you can also set that the economical routes are given priority. To do this, go to the three-point icon in the top right corner of the route planner, tap on “Route options” and press the switch next to “Prefer fuel-efficient routes”.

For optimized route guidance, you can also specify the engine type in the app settings, since according to Google “the percentage savings and the recommended route may vary depending on the vehicle engine”. If you press the three-point icon in the top right of the route planning and go to “Route options”, you can select the drive type on the next level under “Motor type”. Here you have the options “Gasoline”, “Diesel”, “Hybrid” or “Electric”.

All in all, the new feature is a really welcome help in keeping fuel costs in check. We definitely recommend the whole thing once – e.g. B. on the way to work – try it out and see what savings are possible. The feature is currently being rolled out and should have reached all users in the coming weeks.
