A week before the launch of Apple’s iPhone 14 Pro, there were rumors that the smartphone would come with a new 30W charger. Twitter user DuanRui posted that since a charger brand began to send “new charger products” to the media, the iPhone 14 Pro series may natively support 30W charging power and will be promoted in the iPhone 14 series experience video.
He also said that “the data cable provided by the charger manufacturer is still the Lightning interface”, after it was revealed that Apple plans to change the mobile phone port to USB-C in the 2023 iPhone 15 series.
In March of this year, analyst Ming-Chi Kuo wrote, “Apple may release its next-generation GaN gallium nitride charger in 2022, supporting 30W and featuring a new form factor.”
Apple has previously released a new 35W GaN charger for the redesigned M2 MacBook Air, and the iPhone 14 Pro is expected to support faster charging.
Twitter user Kioriku believes that the next iPhone will support 30W charging, with “charge cycles starting at 30W or higher” and then “down to 27-25W.”
Apple’s first GaN charger, released in 2021, is a 140W USB-C power adapter for the new 16-inch MacBook Pro. GaN technology enables smaller, lighter and more energy-efficient chargers than silicon-based chargers.
Apple changes the capabilities of its adapters almost every year. For example, the iPhone 11 Pro supports an 18W charger, the iPhone 12 Pro supports a new 20W adapter, and now there are rumors that the iPhone 14 Pro will support a GaN 30W charger, but users need to purchase the charger separately.
