iFixit has released a teardown video of AirPods Pro (2nd generation). iFixit criticizes Apple’s attitude, saying that it is impossible to disassemble and repair like the AirPods series so far.
AirPods Pro (2nd generation) with recycled magnets
iFIxit has released a teardown video of AirPods Pro (2nd generation), following iPhone14, iPhone14 Pro Max, and Apple Watch Ultra.
In the X-ray photograph of AirPods Pro (2nd generation), the part shaded in black is a magnet made of recycled rare earth materials that Apple announced as an environmental initiative.
You can see that many magnets are used inside the AirPods Pro (2nd generation).
In addition, iFixit, a company in the repair industry, claims that recycling consumes a lot of energy, so repairing is better for the environment.
Pry open the earphone and disassemble
In order to open the AirPods Pro (2nd generation), iFixit uses a vise to apply force and pry open a small gap.
Although it was difficult for the ZIF connector buried in the adhesive, it seems that the disassembly work proceeded smoothly after removing it.
The driver and battery are tucked inside the earbuds and are a pain to get out.
The AirPods Pro (2nd generation) stem (the stick that sticks out of the ear) contained a single antenna and an H2 chip.
When I heated the tip of the stem with a heat gun and opened it, there was a microphone and glue inside.
Cutting open the stem reveals an antenna and a capacitive touch sensor for touch control.
The part that connects the Lightning port and strap hole
The Llightning port on the bottom of the charging case and the strap attachment hole on the side are connected by a metal plate-like part, which is fixed by four elaborate soldering.
Lumafield speculated from the CT scan image of the AirPods Pro (2nd generation) charging case that this metal part might be an antenna for “finding”.
Apple criticized for being impossible to repair
iFixit, which disassembles AirPods Pro (2nd generation), is similar to the original AirPods, AirPods (2nd generation), original AirPods Pro, and AirPods (3rd generation) series products. He points out that it is impossible and criticizes Apple that disposable products are negative for the environment. AirPods Max was the only one in the AirPods series that was highly rated for ease of repair.
