Apple extends 13-inch MacBook Pro backlight repair plan

Apple this week extended its global 13-inch MacBook Pro display backlight service plan, authorizing eligible notebooks to provide up to 5 years of service after the original purchase date or 3 years after the planned start date, whichever is longer. The previous deadline was four years after the original purchase date.

Apple extends 13-inch MacBook Pro backlight repair plan

After Apple determined that in the 13-inch MacBook Pro sold from October 2016 to February 2018, a “very small portion” of the display may have a vertical bright area at the bottom of the display or the backlight completely stopped working. On May 2019 The program was launched on the 21st. Eligible models include MacBook Pro (13-inch, 2016, two Thunderbolt 3 ports) and MacBook Pro (13-inch, 2016, four Thunderbolt 3 ports).

To identify the Mac model you have, click on the Apple logo in the upper left corner of the screen and select “About This Mac” from the menu. Apple has not yet extended the program to any other MacBook models.

Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider will replace the display for the affected 13-inch MacBook Pro models free of charge. To start the repair process, visit the Get Support page on the Apple website. If you think your MacBook Pro is affected by this issue and you paid for the repair of the display, you can contact Apple for possible refunds.

In 2019, the repair website iFixit reported that the backlight problem was caused by a delicate flexible cable that would wear out and break when the display is repeatedly turned on and off on the affected 13-inch MacBook Pro models. Apple extended the length of the flexible cable by 2 mm in the 2018 model, which seems to solve this problem.
