Some M1 Macs have a bug that prevents them from recovering from the screen saver

M1 MacBook Pro Air

I’m having a bug on my M1 Mac that seems to be a “fast user switch” issue.

The screen saver starts without permission

There have been a series of reports of bugs on M1 Macs where the screen saver starts automatically and cannot be erased.

In macOS Big Sur, you can turn the fast user switch “on” to switch to another user account without the current user logging out of the account.

However, in the Apple community forum, the forum of the US media MacRumors and Reddit, if you switch accounts with this fast user switch turned on, the screen saver will suddenly be displayed and you will not be able to see anything other than the mouse pointer. Many reports have been received.

Occurs on M1 Mac with macOS Big Sur

Once in this state, for M1 MacBook Air and MacBook Pro, the only option is to close and reopen the lid, press the Power / Touch ID key, or press the Option-Command-Q key to return to the login screen.

According to the post, I’m having problems with M1 Macs with all macOC Big Sur versions, including the latest macOS Big Sur 11.1.

Keep the fast user switch off

It seems that the easiest way to prevent the problem at this time is to not turn on the fast user switch. This feature is turned off by default.

By the way, the procedure to turn on the fast user switch is as follows.

  1. On your Mac, choose Apple Menu> System Preferences, click Users & Groups, and then click Login Options.
  2.

  3. If the lower left lock is locked, click it to unlock the Preferences panel.
  4. Select “Fast User Switch Menu Display:” and select how the Fast User Switch menu should be displayed in the menu bar.

I hope it will be resolved in the next macOS update.
