Is the number of Apple TV + members about 10% of those eligible for free? Analysts give three reasons

Analysts have announced that Apple TV + members will only account for about 10% of those who can purchase an iPhone or other device and watch it for free. Some of the reasons why the number of members has not increased are lack of advertising and a small number of programs at the beginning.

Apple TV + has less than 10 million members?

Apple TV +, which was launched in more than 100 countries and regions around the world in November 2019, will be charged for a year if a family member purchases an iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, or Mac (600 yen per month in Japan) It will be free.

Apple has not announced Apple TV + membership, but Bernstein analyst Tony Sakonagi estimates that Apple TV + membership is less than 10 million.

He estimates that 90 million iPhones and other units will be eligible for one year of free use of Apple TV +, and estimates that only about 10% of Apple TV + users will be free.

Three reasons why the number of Apple TV + members is not growing

Sakonagi cited the following three reasons why the number of Apple TV + members has not increased.

1. Apple is not effectively promoting Apple TV + and is not encouraging 1.5 billion users on an installed base
2. Apple underestimates subscription rates or intentionally curbs promotion spend to mitigate the impact on performance when Apple TV + launches
3. Compared to Disney +, which gained 10 million members in the first day of service, there is less content on Apple TV +, so user empathy has not been obtained

Disney +, which started service almost at the same time as Apple TV +, announced that the number of members exceeded 28 million in the first two months of the service.

Research firm estimates that 33.6 million members are members in the United States alone

Regarding Apple TV + membership, research firm Ampere Analysis released an estimate of 33.6 million in the US alone in late January, a significant difference from Sakonagi’s forecast.

Apple is continuing to enhance the content of Apple TV +, and has been reported that Apple may acquire major movie company MGM.
