According to a recent evaluation by Friendsurance, a provider of mobile phone insurance, there have been the most damage reports for Apple iPhones in 2019. The most common type of damage was the display break.
Cell phone damage in 2019
Every year Friendsurance evaluates all reported and regulated damage reports for smartphones and compiles interesting numbers from them. The numbers, which have just been published for 2019, help mobile phone buyers to estimate how high the costs in the event of a claim and whether an iPhone insurance policy is worthwhile. For Apple smartphones in particular have had the most damage reports by far in the past year.
Apple again leads the way
In Germany, the most damage for iPhones was reported to insurance companies in 2019. However, this does not necessarily indicate that Apple smartphones are particularly susceptible to damage. After all, with a market share of around 25%, the iPhone is one of the most popular smartphones, right behind the Samsung devices (47% market share).
In addition, Apple devices are insured much more often than other smartphones due to the high purchase price. For example, 50% of all mobile phone insurance at Friendsurance is taken out for an iPhone.
Such an iPhone insurance also makes sense since iPhones incur the highest repair costs on average in the event of damage.
The most common cell phone damage
As in previous years, the display break was the most common cell phone damage in 2019. While the proportion was 54% in 2018, 64% of all reported cell phone damage was broken displays last year.
Damage caused by liquid (4.5%) and loss due to theft and robbery (1.4%) are rather negligible, while the fairly broad “Other damage” area comes second with 28%. Especially since the new devices are increasingly waterproof and the numbers for cell phone thefts have been declining for years because the devices have better and better protection mechanisms.
On average, most damage is reported in the second year after taking out mobile phone insurance (46%), although the value in 2018 was still 32%. This is partly due to the fact that cell phone owners are trying to protect their smartphones with covers or tempered glass films, but also because the new smartphone models are becoming ever more robust.
But the devices are also becoming increasingly expensive and complex, which can lead to high costs in the event of damage.
Cost of a cell phone damage
In 2019, the average cost of cell phone damage was € 351. For example, the cost of replacing a display on an iPhone 11 was around € 300.
The more complex devices make repairs more and more expensive. Depending on whether original parts or inexpensive no-name spare parts are used for a repair, the repair costs can fluctuate greatly.
If the iPhone is stolen or lost, even a total loss of up to € 1,000 must be recognized. Mobile phone insurance can therefore make sense.
Is iPhone insurance worthwhile?
If one sets the average repair costs in the amount of € 350 in relation to the costs for a cell phone insurance with € 119.88 per year, then taking out a cell phone insurance seems to make sense, especially for high-priced iPhone models.
