Information that Qualcomm, a major system-on-chip (SoC) for smartphones, is developing a new SoC. This chip is a derivative of Snapdragon 888 and seems to be a low-priced chip that does not have a built-in 5G communication modem.

Chips for regions where 5G is not yet widespread?

This information was posted by Twitter user Roland Quandt (@rquandt).

According to it, a lower version of Qualcomm’s high-end SoC, Snapdragon 888, is under development and will not have a built-in 5G communication modem.

It cannot be said that the infrastructure for 5G communication has spread sufficiently throughout the world, and there are still many areas where only 4G communication is available.

Since the price of the chip can be reduced by not incorporating a 5G communication modem, this chip may be positioned as an affordable flagship smartphone SoC for such regions.

Qualcomm energetically expanding its lineup

Qualcomm recently announced the high-end 800-series chip Snapdragon 870.

There are also rumors that the Snapdragon 775 / 775G is under development.

The competition between Qualcomm and its rival MediaTek is intensifying, and it seems that it is essential to expand the lineup in order to take the market share.
