How to Recover Mac Startup Sound Easily

Apple Mac

A way to easily restore the startup sound “Jan”, which no longer sounds on Macs after 2016, has been discovered.

Startup sound disappeared after 2016 MacBook Pro

The characteristic startup sound when turning on the Mac was familiar to many Mac users, but the startup sound has stopped playing in the MacBook Pro and later models released in 2016.

However, Twitter user “@chaysegr” discovered how to restore the Mac startup sound on macOS Catalina, and posted a video showing the startup sound being heard from MacBook Pro.

Just copy and paste commands into the “Terminal” app

To play a startup sound on a Mac, simply paste the following command into the Terminal app and enter your password when prompted.

sudo nvram StartupMute =% 00

If you shut down or restart your Mac, you will hear nostalgic sounds at startup.

“@TempAccountNull” has found that if the startup sound is no longer needed, paste the following command in the “Terminal” to restore it.

sudo nvram StartupMute =% 01

U.S. media 9to5Mac reporter Michael Potak also commented, “ I was able to confirm the operation on multiple Macs, ” confirming the on / off of the startup sound even with the 2017 model MacBook Pro I use I’m done.

The Mac startup sound was inspired by the Beatles

Jim Leaks, a sound designer at Apple, created the Mac startup sound.

Leaks said that the clue to creating a Mac startup sound was the Beatles song “A Day in the Life.” You can listen to this video in about 4 minutes and 20 seconds.

Mr. Leaks is a person who made the shutter sound of the iPhone by processing the shutter sound of the Canon AE-1 as well as the startup sound and notification sound of the Mac.
