Since Google cancelled the unlimited unlimited cloud storage space and unlimited album space, it recently announced the “Recent changes to the Google Workspace for Education storage policy” plan to stop the unlimited storage space of the G Suite Education Edition, starting from July 2022 at all levels Schools and universities have shrunk to 100TB of pool storage space. Key 1. G Suite Education Edition Rename and Space Adjustment
Google renamed the original G Suite Education Edition to “Google Workspace for Education”, and adjusted the storage space of each school to 100TB pool storage space for all users to use.
The new strategy will be implemented in two stages. The effective date for existing schools is “July 2022”. If it is applied after “January 1, 2022”, the new strategy will be implemented directly.
Key point 2. What is Google Workspace for Education?
Over the past 15 years, Google has been working hard to construct teaching tools for educators and students until the next era of “Google Workspace for Education”, the next era of G Suite Education Edition launched on February 17, 2021.
As for Google Workspace for Education, it will still include the services currently used, such as Google and education services such as classroom, meeting, Gmail, calendar, cloud drive, etc., but it will be divided into free and paid versions.
Point 3. Current students and alumni will be affected
It is expected that after the implementation of Google Workspace for Education, the free space is only 100TB after all, which will limit and affect the original “graduated alumni” space. The school will clear ghost accounts that have not been used for two years. It is recommended that important files or backups be placed In the Google account space, including Google Cloud, Google Album photos, etc., upload back to the computer for backup before July 2022.
As for the students in school, the school will take the students as the priority consideration. It is recommended to ask the management unit of the computer center or the calculation center to confirm how the school should respond to the new Google Workspace for Education plan.

Key point 4. The education version is divided into four versions (free and paid)
A paid version will be launched. The main reason is that most schools currently rely on G Suite Education Edition accounts to use Classroom to attend classes and submit homework. Google has also decided to launch 25 functions in 2020, in addition to improving security control and collaboration , And also join the Google Meet online remote class and meeting functions, from 2022 onwards all three paid plans and one free plan are as follows:
- Google Workspace for Education Fundamentals (formerly known as G Suite Education Edition):
The original free version of G Sutie Education Edition used by the school was renamed “Google Workspace for Education Fundamentals”, which is the same as the basic version. Except for the name, new features and space adjustments, the rest has hardly changed. - Google Workspace for Education Plus (formerly known as G Suite Enterprise Education Edition):
Schools can choose to pay for the educational version, which can provide advanced security and analysis functions, enhance teaching tools and other functions, and assist schools in flipping classroom courses.
In addition, the paid version has two versions, Google Workspace for Education Standard and Teaching and Learning Upgrad. The latter joins Google Meet. Up to 250 online meetings and 10,000 viewers can simultaneously watch live broadcasts, interactive Q&A, opinion surveys, breakout rooms, and hand-in assignments. Key point 5. Schools can spend money to increase capacity
If the school budget is sufficient, you can also choose to purchase a Google Workspace for Education Plus license, and the shared pool will receive an additional 20GB of storage space.
If you are already a G Suite Enterprise Education Edition (old version) authorized customer, as long as you purchase a paid employee license, the shared pool will get an additional 100 GB of storage space. For details, please refer to “Storage space guide“.
For example, if you purchase 5,000 G Suite Enterprise Education Edition licenses, the capacity of the storage pool will be 600 TB:
- 100 TB (basic storage space) + (5,000 licenses x 100 GB = 500 TB) = 600 TB of available storage space
Point 6. What happens if the space exceeds the upper limit?
If the account storage space has exceeded the upper limit, it will cause the following situations:
- Can no longer upload and back up new photos, videos or files to Google hard drive/album
- Unable to backup original quality photos and videos to Google Photos
- Gmail sending and receiving letters will be affected
If the space lasts for 2 years or more, and there is no release or purchase of more space to restore, Google will first send an email to inform, if the reminders and warnings in the last three months have not improved, all data will be deleted automatically.
If the data takes up a lot of space and is adjusted by the administrator, the data may also be erased by Google services.
Key point 7. Backup key points
Google Workspace for Education includes the contents of users’ Gmail, cloud drives, and photo albums. If there is a large amount of data stored in Google Drive or Google Photos, it is recommended to back them up in advance.
Key 8. Managers should be careful when operating
Google also reminds the administrator that if the operation is improper, the data will be erased by various Google services, and the data inside cannot be recovered. It is recommended that school administrators be very careful when creating or changing rules. It is recommended to set a few users first. The rules will be tested first and then applied to the entire school organization.
Key point 9. Insufficient personal space can be solved by these methods

10. The main reason that caused the G suite education account to be restricted
Google will restrict the space of G Suite education accounts. The main reason is that too many people abuse G Suite accounts at will. Some people even sell Google education accounts on online auctions. More users will share movies, albums, software, games, porn and other information. Lost all of the Google cloud space, resulting in many accounts with more than 10TB, 20TB, or 40TB, and some people even used false or fake domain registration to apply, which caused too many people to abuse it, and Google decided to take back all benefits .
