First up, iOS 15.1 beta 3 enables the native ProRes capture for iPhone 13 Pro and Pro Max in the camera app, though you’ll need to enable it over in the settings App if you want to give it a try. Its under Settings, Camera, Formats, and then you just flick on that Process switch in there. Bear in mind however if you’re going to try this that every minute of 10 Bit HDR ProRes you record on your iPhone will take up 1.7GB of storage. As long as you’re OK with 1080p. If you want that in 4K, you can bump that up to 6GB, but only if you sprung for the 256GB or larger storage option. Apple also only seems to be giving the option of ProRes 422HQ.

If you don’t run the betas but have an iPhone 13 pro or Pro Max, you can use the Filmic Pro app to shoot ProRes too as of this week with options for ProRes Proxy, ProRes LT, 422 and 422HQ, giving more quality and file size options, but be aware that it doesn’t give you the Dolby Vision HDR of the native camera app, so you know, if you want that… don’t use it.

On the subject of Beta camera changes, there is now an auto macro toggle in the settings too, giving you the control on whether you want apple to switch that for you. And on the subject of alternatives, the Halide camera app gives some of that Macro goodness, regardless of whether you have the iPhone 13 generation or not, so may be worth a try if you fancy playing around with that kind of feature too.

macOS Monterey beta 9 has also been released to developers, with MacOs set to bring a redesigned Safari Browser, Shortcuts on the Mac, focus modes, quick notes, AirPlay to Mac and Universal Control. Universal control however, probably the most impressive part of the new MacOS experience hasn’t been enabled as yet in the betas, though there is a work around that’s allowed it to work partially since Beta 5, so this may be a delayed feature or just that Apple is holding it back so the full impact comes when MacOS is released, rather than having pesky YouTubers showing it off through the beta phase and making it less exciting on the day. If that’s the case it must be absolutely bulletproof in behind the scenes testing…

tvOS also got its beta 2 version, which has re-enabled SharePlay testing, one of the marquis features at WWDC that didn’t ship on the .0 release, allowing you to synchronise watch parties with friends remotely.

Finally, Apple’s investor call is scheduled for Thursday October 28th, so lets see what that could mean for our missing event invitations.

As it looks pretty solid that we’re not getting the October 12th event now, we have October 19th and October 26th on the table. Google has an event on the 19th for the pixel as we talked about earlier, and a lot of people have said Apple wouldn’t want to compete with that – though I’d say its barely competition. But because Apple’s investor call falls on the 28th, they would likely want to be able to comment on the strong demand for these products that went on sale on October 22nd for delivery on the 29th, with influencers likely to be getting the products early and embargoes on their reviews lifting on either the 26th or 27th.

Assuming Apple was unaware of the Google event date I don’t think they would change their plans last minute to avoid it, as that would also throw off worldwide logistics that have probably been booked months ahead of time, all the marketing and media buying that they’ve likely got booked in… makes sense? If it does come on the 26th instead of the 19th, its because that’s what Apple already had planned, not because the Pixel event got dropped when they wanted to announce the next generation of Macs.
