Elon Musk is almost desperate to change the course of the passenger plane experience and he wants to do this immediately by introducing flawless and fast wifi internet on all the jetliners around the world. The team behind SpaceX’s developing satellite internet network Starlink said at a conference panel on Wednesday that it is in talks with “several” airlines to beam internet to their aircraft. Elon Musk’s SpaceX plans to expand Starlink beyond rural households and onto planes as it prepares to commercially deploy the internet network later this year. Inter-satellite communications – a technology in which satellites talk with one another through laser links without first bouncing signals off ground stations – will be necessary for Starlink to provide connectivity to planes flying over isolated areas of the ocean far from base stations. “This inter-satellite link will be featured in the next phase of our constellation, which is now in development,” Hofeller noted.
