SpaceX certainly had a benchmark year in 2022.
The company beat its own annual record for most launches in a year, hitting 32 launches by July.
At the time of writing this article, the company has just completed 60 launches in the last 12 months.
A Falcon 9 rocket lifts off from pad 40 at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station on SpaceX’s Starlink 5-1 mission early Wednesday morning.
That means SpaceX officially fulfills CEO Elon Musk’s bold goal.
Musk himself also confirmed this on Twitter!
Interestingly, the mission is not only SpaceX’s 60th launch of the year but also the first launch into the Starlink Gen2 constellation which the company eventually intends to launch on the new Starship mega-rocket!
SpaceX is developing a much larger, higher-power Starlink satellite platform capable transmitting of signals directly to cell phones. But with the Starship’s first orbital test flight still on hold, SpaceX officials have signaled they will start launching the Gen2 satellites on Falcon 9 rockets.
And the Wednesday launch is the first spacecraft deployed into a new segment of the Starlink constellation.
The Falcon 9 set to release the 54 satellites at 530-kilometer-high (329-mile) orbit at an inclination of 43 degrees to the equator – the orbital altitude and inclination set aside for use by SpaceX’s second-generation Starlink network.
