Not sure whom to blame for the brightness problem.
My rEFInd folder with EFI shell, startup.nsh script, and custom menu entry:
You install it the same way as the untouched rEFInd. See the installation guide: https://www.rodsbooks.com/refind/installing.html
Other Macs may require different variables in startup.nsh, even if they are still a 2009 Mac with GeForce 9400M. Find out your variables: https://superuser.com/questions/671660/graphics-card-not-working-on-windows-8-1-on-mac
