For a company of Huawei’s size, if it wants to continue to develop, it must increase innovation, and they have indeed done so.
As of the end of 2022, Huawei holds a total of more than 120,000 valid authorized patents around the world, and 29 companies have signed bilateral agreements with Huawei and paid for Huawei patent licenses, from China, the United States, Europe, Japan, South Korea and other regions.
In terms of R&D investment, in 2022, Huawei’s R&D expenses will be about 161.5 billion yuan, accounting for 25.1% of the annual revenue.
In the past ten years, the accumulated research and development expenses have exceeded RMB 977.3 billion. By the end of 2022, there will be more than 114,000 R&D employees, accounting for 55.4% of the total number of employees.
As of 2022, there are currently more than 210,000 5G standard essential patents declared globally, involving 47,000 patent families (a patent family includes multiple patents that are applied for in different countries and enjoy common priority). Among them, China declared 18,000 patent families, accounting for 40% of the world, ranking first.
The target countries/regions with the largest distribution of 5G standard essential patents are: 46,000 in the United States, 39,000 in China, and 31,000 in Europe. Among patent applicants, Huawei has declared more than 6,500 standard-essential patents, accounting for 14% of the world’s total, ranking first.
It was previously reported that Apple and other mobile phone manufacturers have to pay patent fees to Huawei. Regarding similar claims, Ren Zhengfei once made a humorous statement: “We are too busy and developing too fast, so we don’t have time to collect patent fees. When we When you are not busy, when you are free, even if you need patent fees, it will not be as much as Qualcomm.”
According to the official statement, Huawei has formed high-value patent packages in several major fields such as 5G, WiFi 6, audio and video codec, optical transmission, and optical intelligence, and has a certain right to speak. Huawei needs to establish a reasonable price benchmark so that the industry can use Huawei’s patented technology fairly and reasonably. Reasonable payment will establish intellectual property values and soil conducive to innovation all over the world.
