Boot Sequence
Another day, another CPU vulnerability! This time, on the AMD side. Take A Way is a vulnerability that exploits the Way predictor of the L1 cache creating 2 new attack techniques. Collide+probe, and Load+reload. The researchers successfully used these attacks on multiple browsers with high degrees of success. This affects AMD CPU’s all the way from 2011 up to now. In the paper, they also address mitigation with a series of hardware and software modifications but we dont know how much of a performance hit this would cause.
That’s because AMD has yet to push a fix for it despite being notified last year and they dont believe it to be new speculation based attack meaning a tweak on an existing fix could do the job. Now the research has been supported by multiple organizations, but one name sticks out. “Additional funding was provided by generous gifts from Intel. Any opinions, findings, and conclusions or recommendations expressed in this paper are those of the authors and do not necessarily reflect the views of the funding parties.”
Yikes. I mean I dont doubt the validity of their research, but anytime intel is monetarily involved in vulnerability discovery, it doesn’t really look good. Maybe spend more time on researching fixes for your own issues before spending it on the competitor. Especially since positive technologies just found a CSME exploit which could break hardware-based encryption and DRM on Intel CPUs. Anyways, anytime you hear of vulnerabilities like that, the best thing to do is to just try and stay up to date and if you’re a regular joe like me, you probably dont have to worry unless it hinders performance.
