Since Apple’s AirPods Pro started the “active noise reduction” craze, there have been many affordable noise-cancelling headphones on the market. However, noise reduction alone can no longer meet the needs of consumers, and the next wave is about to hit! Foreign media “DigitalTrends” named that the trend of wireless headphones in 2024 will be “spatial audio” and “open headphones”.

Apple launched spatial audio on AirPods Pro for the first time in 2020. By tracking head movements, the headphones can simulate a surround sound effect, allowing sound to come from all directions, not just the left and right sides, which can greatly enhance the sense of immersion. Nowadays, more and more brands are providing spatial audio, such as Apple Music, Amazon Music, Tidal, YouTube, and Netflix. Whether you are watching movies or listening to music, this feature can be found almost everywhere.

Starting this year, mainstream headphone brands have gradually completed this function. For example, Sony added head tracking for the first time in its flagship WF-1000XM5, while Bose’s new series of QuietComfort Ultra also brings spatial audio capabilities, even to speakers from Sonos and JBL. “DigitalTrends” believes that spatial audio will become the next wave of standard specifications for headphones and speakers.

As wireless earphones become more diverse, different needs naturally emerge. For example, for outdoor sports or in the office, people want to listen to music while maintaining alertness and smooth communication. The demand for open earphones is increasing year by year. Compared with noise-cancelling headphones, which try to eliminate external interference as much as possible, open-back headphones are designed to keep the ear canal open, allowing users to naturally maintain contact with the outside world.

Several open-back headphones have been launched in Taiwan this year, including Cleer ARC II, Oladance OWS 2, Sony Float Run WI-OE610, Audio-Technica ATH-CC500BT and JBL Soundgear Sense. “DigitalTrends” predicts that by 2024, more open headphones will appear on the market, bringing more creative designs and improving the shortcomings of poor sound quality.
