Canalys emphasized that the AI function of smartphones is not new. The application of ISP, NPU and other chips has been seen for a long time, even earlier than that of computers. However, with the rise of technologies such as large language models (LLM) and generative AI, at least four conditions must be met to be called an “AI Phone”.
First of all, the SoC processor needs to have at least a set of built-in chips specifically designed to accelerate AI computing. For example, Qualcomm currently uses Hexagon, and Google uses TPU. The second is to ensure that the phone can run large language models such as Google Gemini and Samsung Gauss on its own. Currently, the only one that meets the conditions is Google Pixel 8 Pro.
Canalys also sets standards for running speed. It believes that the large-scale language model reasoning ability of the AI Phone should be faster than that of ordinary elderly people, so it needs to have a running speed of processing 10 sets of tokens per second, and finally runs and generates it on the device. For images, it should be shorter than 2 seconds.
In addition, Canalys believes that if large-scale language models can be used out of the box without having to re-download and install them, and can provide AI-related APIs and SDKs to third-party developers, as well as preset built-in AI functions that can run efficiently, it will be great.
