In order to comply with the European Union’s Digital Market Act (DMA), Apple has recently been unblocking various restrictions on iOS. In an official statement, Apple announced that it will be able to modify the default navigation app next year and will no longer be bound to Apple Maps in the future. .

According to Apple’s public DMA compliance guidelines, one paragraph clearly states that “it is expected to introduce a new default navigation App setting function for users in March 2025.” This means that Apple is about to open up users to the iOS system. By replacing Apple Maps with third parties such as Google Maps and Waze, every time the mobile phone starts navigation, it will be executed directly with the map app selected by the user.

It is still uncertain whether this change will be rolled out to global users, because as part of complying with the DMA, Apple allows users to modify the default browser for the first time in iOS 17.4. They can replace Safari through Google Chrome and Edge. However, It is limited to the EU region where DMA is applicable, and is not open to other countries. Therefore, the default map adjustment is likely to follow the same strategy and is limited to EU users.

In addition to the EU’s DMA, the United States and Japan are also pushing for Apple to open the App Store and impose more ecosystem restrictions. How will Apple respond in the future? It remains to be seen.
