A few days ago, Google engineers revealed that due to “hardware limitations”, Pixel 8 will not be able to support the AI model Gemini Nano like Pixel 8 Pro, causing many fans to be quite dissatisfied. Now Google has changed its tune again! Gemini Nano will definitely be brought to Pixel 8 in the next update.
Since both Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro use Tensor G3 chips, the difference in performance between the two is only the memory capacity. The former is 8GB and the latter is 12GB. However, the Samsung Galaxy S24, which also only has 8GB, can be used with Gemini Nano. As a result, many Pixel 8 users are very disappointed and believe that there should not be such differential treatment.
According to foreign media “9to5google”, Google has overcome hardware limitations and is determined to provide Gemini Nano for Pixel 8 in the form of a developer test version in the next “Feature Drop” update in June. In response to this, Google also pointed out that “running large language models on mobile phones with different memory specifications may bring different user experiences. Therefore, we have been testing and verifying this matter through Pixel 8.”
With the addition of Gemini Nano, Pixel 8 will have more powerful local AI computing capabilities. It can obtain recording summaries without the need for an Internet connection, or enable the smart reply function of the Gboard input method to allow AI to predict responses based on the conversation.
What can be noted is that Google’s move may also be paving the way for the Pixel 8a mid-range mobile phone to be released in May, according to foreign rumors. Pixel 8a is also equipped with a Tensor G3 chip and 8GB of RAM. If it cannot support AI models, it may be difficult to compete with other brands of mobile phones, and it will also go against Google’s strategic policy of fully attacking AI.
