Said this material is new because compared to the previous generation E3 material, this material belongs to Samsung’s latest OLED light-emitting material, but this material has been applied on the previous Xiaomi 11.
So what exactly is this material? Why does Xiaomi use screens made of this material on its two flagships?
What exactly is the E4 luminescent material on Xiaomi 11/Redmi K40
Before talking about the Samsung E4 screen used in Xiaomi 11/Redmi K40, we first understand the composition and principle of the OLED screen: OLED itself is composed of a cathode, an emission layer, a conductive layer, an anode, and a substrate. It is made of layered film and plastic/glass substrate.
The principle is that light-emitting materials of organic semiconductors form excitons under the action of an electric field, etc., and eventually cause light-emitting phenomena, which shows the important position of light-emitting materials in OLED screens.
The Samsung E4 used in the Xiaomi Mi 11/Redmi K40 series is the latest luminescent material developed by the latter, and its display effect is naturally obvious to all: as the first Samsung E4 luminescent material mobile phone, the screen of Xiaomi Mi 11 has also been awarded the authoritative screen evaluation agency DisplayMate. The highest A+ level given.
With the support of E4 materials, the Mi 11 screen has also refreshed 13 records including the highest screen resolution, highest OLED peak brightness, and lowest screen reflectivity.
Judging from the promotional materials given by Xiaomi, Samsung E4 luminescent materials have been greatly optimized in terms of peak brightness and power consumption compared with the past E3 materials:
The former has a peak brightness of 1500 nits, can reach 900 nits under strong light, and has a contrast ratio of 5000000:1. Relatively speaking, the power consumption is reduced by 15%. As for other aspects, Xiaomi has not mentioned too much.

E4 luminescent materials are very new and very good, but there is also an M series
Although the E4 material this time did earn a lot of exposure for Xiaomi, as the saying goes, the fertilizer does not flow out of the field, and the E series luminescent material is only one of the product lines of Samsung Display, and it also has a product line with a higher positioning. .
The current product line of Samsung Display can be roughly divided into three categories:
·M series: The most high-end positioning, for Samsung flagship machine use.
·LTPO: Apple’s exclusive customization, low power consumption.
·E series: for export.
The AMOLED screen used in Samsung’s newly released Galaxy S21 series this year is made of high-end M-series substrates: Galaxy S21/S21+ uses M10 substrates, and the “super cup” Galaxy S21 Ultra uses M11 substrates. The latter has lower power consumption than the former.
From the perspective of product positioning, the Samsung E4 material used by Xiaomi is roughly equivalent to the export version of the M10.
From the existing data, the power consumption of the E4 material of Xiaomi Mi 11 is 15% lower than the previous generation, while the Samsung M11 is 16% lower than the previous generation. However, the two use different series of materials, and their comparison standards are also different. .

On the whole, the E4 material of Xiaomi 11/K40 Pro is not too far from Samsung’s own M10 material. It can be said that the former is equivalent to the export version of the latter. It is not clear how it compares with Samsung’s latest M11 luminescent material.
However, the actual performance of the first two models is slightly different even if the same material is used due to product positioning and other factors.
In addition, from a market point of view, the Redmi K40 series’s “most expensive straight screen” is also echoed by Xiaomi 11’s first Samsung E4 luminescent material. After all, the latter adopts a curved design. If another E4 is released at this time The straight screen can cover the existing two mainstream mobile phone forms.
And from the previous article, Samsung’s E4 luminescent material is basically the best material that other mobile phone manufacturers except Apple can obtain from Samsung in 2021. In recent years, domestic mobile phone manufacturers have also begun to support domestic screen manufacturers. After all, no one will give their best screens to others.
Therefore, Huawei has gradually begun to support BOE and other screen manufacturers, while Xiaomi chose to cooperate with TCL in order to lay out the mobile phone screen market and promote the development and production of domestic advanced screens.
