Apple released the anti-lost helper AirTag this year, and related privacy disputes are still unresolved. According to foreign media reports, there have been many incidents of AirTag suspected of being used for tracking and tracing in North America. Although Apple has launched a detection app for Android users, there are still many restrictions.
Jeana from the United States pointed out to the foreign media “Mashable” that when driving home, the iPhone kept popping up notifications to warn that there was an unknown AirTag nearby. However, it could not be found in the car. At first, it was only a false alarm, and finally it was found on the front wheel. An AirTag was found in the wheel arch. Her post on Twitter attracted widespread attention.
This is not the only AirTag tracking incident. “11alive” pointed out that the Atlanta police in the United States had received multiple cases of AirTag being used for tracking. The “Fox13” report also stated that there was a similar situation in Michigan where AirTag was hidden. At the bottom of the car, thieves were allowed to locate the target of the burglary. There are also many examples in Canada.
Although AirTag itself does not have GPS, the built-in Bluetooth will send signals to surrounding iOS devices and report the location to the AirTag holder via Apple’s own Find My network in an encrypted manner. Apple has set up some alert functions. For example, if the AirTag leaves the holder for 8-24 hours, it will sound an alarm and allow the iPhone to receive notification messages that an unfamiliar AirTag is approaching, preventing it from being used for tracking.
The above prevention mechanism still worries foreign media, believing that the protection is insufficient, especially for Android users. Apple launched Tracker Detect on the Play Store this month to prevent AirTag tracking. It is rare to create a dedicated app for Android phones, but in fact it is quite insufficient.
The “Washington Post” pointed out that in addition to additional downloads, users have to open the app for detection and cannot run in the background. Carnegie Mellon University professor Jason Hong bluntly said that Apple’s current practice is not ideal, and users have to Open the App regularly for testing, otherwise you will never know that you are being tracked for a lifetime.
