2021 Tesla Model Y RECAP (NHTSA Ranking, Interior Updates & More!)
This year sees the launch of the Standard Range entry-level model, which comes with rear-wheel drive only and an approximate driving range of 244 miles. With the Model Y for 2021, it is difficult to tell what else will change because, unlike other car manufacturers, Tesla is known to make a number of running changes over the year instead of sorting items into a big batch when flipping the switch from model year to model year. That being said, we are not anticipating any significant design or technology changes this year, other than the inclusion of an optional pair of pop-up third-row jump seats.
To make it more interesting, Tesla also seems to have made some improvements to the interior of the Model Y that are not refreshed from the 2021 Model 3.
From the new image in the online configurator, one change is visible; a new wood panel at the door. There is not much up front in the Model Y, apart from the steering wheel, a couple of stalks protruding from the column, and a landscape-oriented 15-inch touchscreen. It’s almost like the interior designer had a phobia about buttons. At first, this kind of starkness is oddly impressive, but we wonder if over time it might become just plain boring.
For all the critical driving stuff, the infotainment system, and even climate control, the screen is the sole source of data. The screen is user-friendly, at least, and looks fantastic.
How Tesla Model Y achieved historic safety training?
For years, Tesla’s vehicles have been conducting crash tests by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), and Model Y is now the latest to enter those ranks, with the mid-size SUV earning five stars in each category evaluated for crash safety by the group.
On a range of crash test indicators, NHTSA rates vehicles, including frontal crashes (with subcategories for both driver and passenger seats), side crashes (including both barrier and pole crashes), and rollover scenarios. The Model Y scores five-star outcomes across the board, although these outcomes are only normal, as with previous NHTSA tests.
