Today, the Internet has become an integral part of human life. According to statistics, there are about 4.6 billion active internet users around the globe which makes up almost 60% of the world population.
To date, internet connectivity requires extensive underground cable connections, which makes the facility inaccessible in many parts of the world. Elon Musk and SpaceX revealed their revolutionary project, Starlink back in 2015.
The Starlink program is basically a constellation of artificial satellites that are also called “Satellite Internet Constellations”. The primary function of the Starlink Constellation will be to provide satellite internet access to most parts of the Earth, including remote areas.
SpaceX’s Starlink is still in the beta phase but is soon expected to go into the next phase. In this phase, Starlink is offering its service to 17 countries with more than 1600 satellites already up in the sky.
The work on the Starlink project began about 7 years back in 2014 when SpaceX filed an ITU application through a Norwegian telecom regulator. But that year it was not revealed to the public.
The project was made public in January 2015. According to SpaceX CEO Elon Musk, he was willing to cater to the unmet demand for low-cost internet. He also mentioned that he wanted to acquire a small share of the local internet usage in big cities around the globe.
Although it was expected and planned that the first launch of the Starlink satellite would take place before 2016, it finally happened in February 2018. The Starlink program saw many ups and downs due to various design and licensing issues.
But finally, it was ready to be tested in 2018 and was all set to change the way humans use the Internet. In 2018 SpaceX also received regulatory approval for more than 7500 broadband satellites.
This was an addition to the initial approval that they received for 4425 satellites in 2016. The 2016 approval was for satellites that could be deployed at altitudes ranging between 1110 kilometers to 1325 kilometers which are well above the International Space Station.
But the new deal allowed them to deploy the satellites at a much lower altitude below the International Space Station.
