With all the work happening around SpaceX’s Starship, new updates have become a blink-and-miss issue. Don’t worry, because we’re here to give you the latest news, from the new orbital launch pad to the Starship spacecraft and the Super Heavy Rocket Boosters.

Many prototypes will come and go in the development lifecycle of a SpaceX rocket as the company makes refinements by carrying forward lessons to new prototypes. This is a part of SpaceX’s ongoing development strategy, a trick that has allowed it to leapfrog established players in the spacecraft industry.

When a prototype ends up in flames and crashes, it might appear like a wasted effort. However, to SpaceX, the data collected from the outcome is a collection of information that reveals how not to construct a rocket to the design team.

Sometimes the construction of a prototype occurs simultaneously with its successor. Take, for example, the previous prototypes SN20 and Booster 4. The opinion for some time has been that the two prototypes stacked together would send out the first orbital test flight of the starship.

SpaceX had even demonstrated stacking them on the launch site, managing to generate an iconic photo reminiscent of the famous Empire State Building worker’s photo. Both prototypes looked advanced enough to be used for an orbital flight. But SpaceX is already working on the successes of the two prototypes named SN21 and Booster 5.

Before we dive into the details of the new prototypes, let us find out how advanced the SN20 prototype is. The SN20 prototype was already wearing a coat of heat shields made from ceramic tiles on half of its body.

These tiles would protect the side of the starship that would be exposed to the tremendous heat generated when the starship re-enters the earth’s atmosphere. Many of the over fifteen thousand pieces got damaged during the installation process; however, the SpaceX crew painstakingly replaced all the damaged tiles.

They marked the tiles green and red, which signified that the tiles weren’t placed properly, or were defective, accordingly. Few of these tiles would go on to drop off during a basic qualification test known as “The Venting Test.” The flying tiles posed a warning of injury to the workers and everyone else who were on the pad.
